Fannin Family,

As we celebrate Literacy Week, I want to share a message from The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. In this story, a young girl named Vashti believes she cannot draw — until a teacher believes in her. With simple encouragement and faith in her ability, that teacher helps Vashti discover her potential and find her confidence.

This story beautifully reflects what happens every day in our schools. Our teachers and staff believe deeply that every student has potential. They see possibilities where others may see doubt. They nurture confidence through words, guidance, and care. They are gifted at helping students find their own “dot” — their starting point for growth and success.

Literacy is at the heart of this transformation. Through reading, writing, speaking, and listening, students discover their voices. Literacy opens doors to imagination, critical thinking, creativity, and lifelong opportunity. When we share meaningful stories like The Dot, we are not only building strong readers — we are building confident learners who believe in themselves.

As a community, we are fortunate to have educators who pour their hearts into unlocking the potential within every child. During Literacy Week, we celebrate not only the power of books, but also the power of teachers who help our students make their mark on the world.

Together, let us continue to champion literacy and support the incredible work happening in our classrooms each day.

Shannon M. Dillard
Superintendent
