FCHS to Host Community-wide Literacy Event

BLUE RIDGE, GA – Thursday, February 20, 2020

Don your cape and save the world! Following the success of the past two years’ literacy events, Fannin County High School (FCHS) will host a Superhero Literacy Night on Thursday, February 20, 2020, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. on the FCHS campus. Students, families, and community members are invited to come immerse themselves in the world of comics, graphic novels, super heroes, and super villains.

Following the interactive literacy festival, one of our most valued and constant literacy partners – the Swan Drive-in Theatre – will host a showing of Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, rated PG, at 6:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $5/ticket (children 5 and under are free), and Steve and Kathy Setser at the local Swan Drive-in are graciously donating all ticket proceeds to funding future Fannin County literacy events and/or projects. Over the past three years, they have been unfailing supporters of our endeavors to increase literacy-focused opportunities for Fannin County families and children.

Signs will guide you around the campus to our various activities; if you get lost along the way, a wandering FCHS or University of North Georgia (UNG) hero will help guide you to your destination! The Fannin County School System is proud to use this night to celebrate our “Local Superheroes,” including Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Firefighters, Police Officers, and heroes of all kinds! Please join us this night and allow us to recognize you and to celebrate your contributions to our community! If you are a “local superhero,” please stop by the main entrance table so that we can recognize you.

A number of engaging activities will be taking place to immerse you into the world of superhero literacy!

  • Design your own comic and/or graphic novel in the Art room. These activities are designed with incremental skills so that they may appeal to a wide age-range.
  • Experiment in the STEM world by creating a radioactive slime that just may help you unlock some of your latent superhero potential in the Chemistry lab!
  • The FCHS Writing Center will host an Escape Room, where you must use your wiles to strategize your escape!
  • If you dare, enter into the Bat Cave that is the FCHS Media Center. There, you will be able to listen to dramatic, costumed readings by the FCHS Drama Department; hone your technological skills by participating in a coding project to design a superhero; and vote on your favorite super hero/super villain from the schools’ respective entries!
  • Also, inquisitive and competent superheroes (or supervillains) will be able to participate in a Book Walk in the Commons Area to win the best prizes of all – comic hero-related books!
  • A photo booth will be provided to help document your life-saving endeavors for the sake of posterity.
  • Meet some of our “local superheroes” and learn about the ways they help serve and protect our community!

Students at each of the schools can enter their individual art work into a “Design your own Superhero/Supervillain” contest. Requirements, including the development of an origin story for many of the grade levels, exist for each of the four grade bands: Pre-K through 2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. A winner will be selected by public vote in each category, and that winner will receive an awesome prize! If your child is interested, please have them complete and submit their entry form and original art work to their school’s office by the end of the day (3:00 p.m.) on Tuesday, February 18, 2020. Entry forms and contest details are available for download below or at each of the schools.

The Fannin County Public Library will host a parent resource room, along with parent jeopardy featuring with prizes, and the Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Association (BRMAA) will also have a representative that night! Hopefully, North Georgia Technical College (NGTC) and the Fannin Literacy Action Group (FLAG) will be able to share Captain Amazing with the community! The University of North Georgia (UNG) Scholars Program students will work across the event as part of their service learning project for the year.

Wear your finest superhero garb (minus masks for safety purposes), and join us for this “marvelous” evening! The literacy festival portion of the evening is entirely free, and it is provided to the Fannin County Community through many generous community partnerships. We hope that you are able to join us for both the festival and the film Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse at the Swan!

This event is designed to welcome all ages. If you would like more information, please feel free to contact Sarah Welch, Director of Instructional Services & Policy, via email at swelch@fannin.k12.ga.us or by phone at 706.632.3771.
